Brake Torque

Brake torque is the rotational force a brake applies to a shaft. It is specified in newton-metres (Nm) at the brake disc or drum.

Static vs dynamic

Static (holding) torque is the torque required to keep a stationary load from moving. Dynamic torque is the torque developed while decelerating a moving load — typically 70–85% of static.

Sizing rule

Typical safety factor is 1.5–2.5× the rated motor torque referred to the brake shaft.

FAQs

Why is dynamic torque lower than static?
Sliding friction is always lower than static friction.
