Storm Brake Troubleshooting — STS and RMG Cranes

Storm brakes either clamp the rail or wedge the wheel. They are the last line of defence in high wind. These are the failures we see most often on South African terminals.

Won't release

Often a stuck thruster piston, an unprimed hydraulic line, or a frozen rail clamp jaw after a salt-fog week. Inspect, free, and lubricate per OEM.

Won't engage

Stuck open spring stack — usually corrosion or contamination. Strip, clean, and replace springs if cracked.

Drift in wind

Worn jaw inserts or rail head deformation. Replace inserts; inspect rail head profile.

False alarm under operation

Limit switch out of adjustment or wear sensor over-sensitive. Recalibrate.

FAQs

How often should storm brakes be tested?
After every named storm event, monthly under no-load, and annually with a full functional test.
Can we keep operating with one storm brake out?
No — never park the crane out of service envelope with reduced storm-brake coverage. Lock down the crane until the brake is restored.
